How to choose
Listening isn’t one skill you either have or don’t. Name the gap first, then pick the app built for it:
- You can read Spanish but lose it at speaking speed → precise listening: dictation.
- You understand slow audio but not real shows or podcasts → extensive listening: lots of real Spanish.
- You understand but freeze when you have to answer → speaking practice.
- You’re near the start → a structured course with listening built in.
Precise listening: catching every word
Atomic Learning gives you one Normal and one Hard Spanish sentence a day, read by natural text-to-speech voices. You type what you hear and see every word marked right or wrong, so you find out exactly which words your ear drops, not just whether you got the gist. Does dictation actually work? covers the method and the research. Daily Dictation works the same way but only for English, so it isn’t an option for Spanish (comparison).
Extensive listening: hours of real Spanish
FluentU turns real videos into lessons with clickable subtitles and vocabulary quizzes, which suits long sessions with real content. Free podcasts and shows with Spanish subtitles do the same job without an app.
Speaking back
Speak trains speaking with an AI conversation tutor. Pimsleur builds its audio lessons around listening and answering out loud. Glossika has you listen to and repeat sentences through spaced repetition. None of these checks word by word what you heard, which is where a dictation sentence complements them.
A full course
Duolingo and Babbel teach a bit of everything: vocabulary, grammar, listening and speaking exercises. If you’re starting from zero, a course gives you the structure; add listening practice on top once you can follow simple sentences.
Combining two
Pair one app for precision with one for volume or speaking: a daily dictation sentence plus a FluentU video, or a sentence before a Speak session.
